Kollmorgen Teams Up with Segway for PACK EXPO Give Away
Mickey Simmons Learns About the Kollmorgen Technology in his New Segway

Riding (or some say driving), a Segway® Personal Transporter (PT) should be on everyone’s bucket list — owning one is an even better idea. Mickey Simmons, Research Analyst at Proctor & Gamble, Cincinnati, Ohio, is experiencing the fun firsthand, after winning his own Segway x2 PT at PACK EXPO. This year’s drawing is the second time that Kollmorgen and Segway have teamed up to give away a brand new Segway x2 at PACK EXPO as a way to demonstrate the revolutionary Segway x2 drive train servo system designed and developed by Kollmorgen.

The Kollmorgen motor technology developed for Segway has unique and critical technical characteristics integral to its successful design and manufacture. Many of these breakthrough advances offer similarly beneficial application in packaging equipment. First and foremost, is the incredibly high level of efficiency and high torque/power density for a servo motor capable of powering a large off-road tire drive train and carrying a full grown man — yet small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. Advanced winding technology, including patented dual motor windings to allow the rider to "limp" home in the event the primary winding fails, and multi-design function overmolding are among the breakthrough features of the x2 servo that provide this power and rugged compactness.

Advanced Tuning Training Class February 18-20th

Kollmorgen’s knowledgeable engineers work every day to build innovative products solve some of the toughest applications on earth – or beyond. Kollmorgen provides a variety of ways you can tap into this vast experience through training, both on-line and through hands on courses, as well as short subject on-line videos.

Coming up in February (2/18 – 20/2014) is one of our premier training offerings on Advanced Tuning. Led by one of our developers, this hands on tuning class is not for the light of heart. In just 3 days, you will try out a variety of tuning methods, and learn things about Bode plots you never knew before. We designed a unique mechanical set-up that allows us to throw a variety of real world set-ups with varying levels of inertia matching ratios and compliance levels. You will be amazed when you complete this course what you can do even with some sloppy mechanical systems.

The class information: Advanced Performance Tuning
This advanced class is not for everyone – We dive into a variety of advanced topics including bode plots, filtering, compliance, plant measurements, resonances and anti-resonances, Nyquist charts, and how to tie all of this together to optimize your machine performance.

• Dates: February 18 – 20, 2014

• Class times: 8:30 – 5:00 each day. Lunch is provided

• Location: Kollmorgen Training Center, Radford, VA

Stop Chasing Cables

Check out the latest blog from our controls and drives product manager discussing how new machine technologies can reduce cable runs. Aleviating the headaches associated with traditional components in a machine system that perform well, but leave the machine builder chasing cables and making tons of wiring connections in the panel.

The machine builder can save money and time and get the same performance. The end-user enjoys greater reliability so these technologies should be on top of the list for everyone. Kollmorgen fits into the scope of this technological revolution well. We have been a pioneer in motion control and the new effort to reduce overall cabling and wiring is no exception. An example you can see in the piece is a system where cabling was reduced from 372 meters to 42 meters. That reduction touches many more aspects than just material costs.
