Kollmorgen Introduces New Stainless Steel AKMH™ Servomotors
Raising the Standard for Hygienic, Washdown Motors and Cables for Food, Pharma, and Caustic Chemical Environments

Kollmorgen's new line of robust stainless steel AKMH™ Motors are designed specifically to address the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). These IP69K rated synchronous servomotors feature a hygienic housing design to meet EHEDG, NSF, BISSC and 3A guidelines. The AKMH Servomotor is constructed with materials to provide long-life and trouble-free operation, even with daily exposure to chemicals and high pressure washdowns. The  AKMH single-cable solution reduces the number of potential failure modes and minimizes installation time.

The smooth surface design, and use of highly corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel, decreases the risk of product recalls by reducing the possibility of bacteria growth. The AKMH requires no additional protection and can be sanitized without covering it or removing it from the machine.

What’s FDA trying to do with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)?

It all began with the public outcry resulting from the 1906 publication of "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. The revelation surrounding the filthy conditions at Chicago area slaughter houses prompted a federal investigation of the meat processing industry which in turn led to the U.S. Congress moving quickly to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. This act was revised by the Federal Food, Drugs and Cosmetics (FD&C) Act of 1938 giving authority to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to oversee the safety of food, drugs and cosmetics.

The FD&C Act has been amended many times since then to enhance safety regulation and compliance. The Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) is the first sweeping major amendment since the FD&C Act became law with added emphasis on preventive controls. Under FSMA, registered facilities will be required to establish and implement hazard analysis and preventive controls (HAPC) for human food. Download a copy of “Food Safety Regulatory Requirements” to learn more about why and how FSMA will be affecting the food and beverage industries.
