How to Maximize Servomotor Accuracy and Machine Performance

When correctly specified, servomotor-powered motion control systems deliver speed and accuracy that are second to none. But there are numerous factors that can lead to disappointing performance if not taken into consideration.

Errors in speed or position can enter the system through imperfect mechanisms that transfer motor power to the load.  Environmental factors such as electrical noise or temperature can introduce positioning errors.  And a servo system can only perform as accurately as the accuracy provided by the feedback device controlling it.X

Read Kollmorgen's white paper, Feedback Choices for Servo Applications, to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of the most commonly used feedback devices, and to help you make a more informed decision for your next servo-based application.

How Kollmorgen Helped One OEM Build a Better Candy Manufacturing Machine

Helping OEMs develop their competitive advantage is what we do best. So when approached by an OEM with the request to “simplify our machine without sacrificing performance,” we jumped at the opportunity.

Kollmorgen helped redesign the customer's candy production machine to accommodate a different packaging style, with fewer parts and superior cycle time, by implementing an AKD® PDMM with integrated multi-axis controller and KBM Series frameless motor.

The high-performance and cost-effective motion control solution has reduced the customer's bill of materials, manufacturing cycle time and costs; reduced machine assembly time from three working days to four hours; increased manufacturing efficiency by 10 percent; and improved system reliability by significantly reducing their parts count.

A Holistic Approach to Machine Design

Traditionally, designing a new machine begins with mechanics, moves to electronics and ends with software, with minimal upfront and ongoing collaboration between engineering teams.

Mechatronics, however, is a holistic approach that incorporates mechanical, electrical and software at the outset of a project.  This promotes open communication and joint decisions on how best to meet performance requirements right from the start.

Learn more about how Mechatronics can help you build a better machine, faster, in Kollmorgen's new Tech Brief, Trends in Mechatronics.
