Expanding the Capability and Ease of Use in our Flagship Automation Platform
Kollmorgen Automation Suite 2.7 simplifies configuration process

Kollmorgen Automation Suite is getting even better. Version 2.7, released this month, includes support for coordinated linear and circular interpolation, new integrated EtherCAT configuration screens, and new line of HMI panels among other enhancements.

Coordinated motion is made easy using standard PLCopen function blocks. Easily program your gluing, cutting, or inspection test station or other machine that requires smooth 2-axis path motion. New integrated screens to configure your EtherCAT network will help you quickly prototype the machine and configure network devices. The new screens automatically scan for and identify all EtherCAT devices and allow you to easily map them into the project code.

A Kollmorgen Automation Suite core principle is providing everything you need to build a top machine and that includes best-in-class visualization and HMI. With the 2.7 release, we are expanding the lineup of HMI panels available. The new HMI panels range from 4” – 21” across three performance levels. All panels have a widescreen format, which increases the surface area by 30% over previous AKI panels. The Kollmorgen Visualization Builder (KVB) is also updated to KVB2.0 version which includes modernization of the programming capabilities.

Download the KVB 2.0 software and run it right on your laptop (no hardware required!) to create, display, and run visualizations in a system.

Many other enhancements are contained in the 2.7 release. See them all in the release notes found here.

How easy is the AKD® BASIC to Use?

To test the ease of use for the AKD BASIC, Kollmorgen recruited a local Virginia Middle School robotics club called “The Tuxedo Pandas." The girls and boys of The Tuxedo Pandas range in age from thirteen to sixteen and cover grades eight, nine and ten.

The Tuxedo Pandas were invited to spend their day off from school at the  Kollmorgen Radford facility. The Tuxedo Pandas were given three identical setups consisting of an AKD BASIC servo drive, a belt driven R2 series actuator with AKM, and end of travel limit sensors and a home sensor located in the middle of the actuator. After a short two hour introductory class, they were given the task to write a program in BASIC to find the end of travel limits, the home input and to create a move that began at home and move 1.5” inside the travel limits then return.

Since this task seemed simple, they were given two hours in which to write their program and could only ask questions for five minutes every thirty minutes.

So how did The Tuxedo Pandas do on their task? All three groups were able to write a program to find the home input and both end of travel limits. All three groups were well on their way to the final portion of the task as time lapsed.

AKD Electronic Gearing- Two Minutes of Motion Series

Kollmorgen's AKD servo drives offer a variety of methods to "electronically gear" two axes together. In Part 2 of this Two Minutes of Motion segment, Gordon reviews how to set up the "follower" axis. Next month we will feature Part 3 on how to bring the leader and follower together.
