How do you satisfy new food safety regulations and improve equipment performance?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires food processors to improve the quality and safety of their operations through existing and new regulations such as FSMA. These initiatives present a critical shift in food safety planning from reactive to proactive mode, forcing end-users to be more cautious about what components they install in their plants for their washdown and food safety applications. Whether you are designing new equipment or working on a redesign, the latest generation of stainless steel servomotors provide a reliable, quickly cleaned and sanitized, hygienic, high-performance solution.

Methods for Providing Cooling or Heat Dissipation for an Electric Motor

Heat dissipation is a critical design element in the overall machine build. Excessive heat could cause burns to users and ignoring motor heat dissipation could result in product failure. Although electric motor design is constantly improving, all generate heat through losses and inefficiencies.

This needs to be evaluated when selecting the proper motor for your application. The Kollmorgen AKM servo motor series uses conductive cooling. Randy Wilson shares more insight in his latest blog post.

Two Minutes of Motion Video Series Reviews Homing Methods

Homing or calibration is required to execute consistent accurate motion by establishing an absolute position. A sequence of predefined motions is normally required in order to determine the system’s absolute position based on inputs such as present position, velocity and desired location.

The AKD® has 15 different methods that can be set in the unit screen to accurately set the home reference. Kollmorgen’s “Two minutes of motion” video series shows how quick and easy the process can be.

AKD Homing Overview

This short video provides you with a walk through the Home Screen in the AKD Workbench software. If you are not sure which home type might be best for you, your journey should begin with this video.

All the Homing types will be discussed in the  two minute series and can be found on Kollmorgen's Youtube channel. Use the quick links below for for types 0 and 1, 2, & 3.

AKD Home Type 0
Home Type 0 is the easiest and most direct of the home types. It uses the current position of the motor for the home reference and allows you to begin motion very quickly.

AKD Home Types 1, 2 & 3
Home Types 1, 2 & 3 use the end of travel limits for the home reference. Home Types 2 & 3 add the feedback zero angle or index to increase the accuracy of the home position.
